Pent-Ups, Minor League Baseball in Utica, NY 1878-1892 $6.00 (1995, softcover, 72 pages with photos) The on-field and off-field story of professional baseball at its very beginnings. Some of the teams Utica played were from Oneida, Auburn, Elmira, Canandaigua, Syracuse, Binghamton, Albany, Rochester, Buffalo, Manchester (NH), Springfield, Worcester, and Hamilton, London, & Toronto, Ontario. BARNSTORMING BASEBALL-THE 1920 ADIRONDACK STARS. A FIRST HAND ACCOUNT OF A BYGONE ERA. $5.00 (2001. softcover, 44 pages) It was the first year of the 'Roaring Twenties' and the start of prohibition. To a group of young men from Northern and Central New York it was a time to enjoy life to its fullest. Dances with local belles, outings to Lake Bonaparte, trips to Canada and the World Series, all-night carousing with bootleg alcohol, vaudeville, burlesque, and the baseball team that brought them together. Here is the story of the summer of 1920-both on field and off field as told by my grandfather, William Markis of Utica, NY, who kept a daily account of that season. The Adirondack Stars were sponsored by the Diana Paper Company of Harrisville, NY. They played teams from Ogdensburg, Watertown, Defereit, Carthage, Massena, Clayton, Alexandria Bay, Rome, Ilion, Syracuse, Utica and Kingston & Brockville, Ontario. The players were a mixture of pros (including former and future major leaguers) and amateurs (including Syracuse and Colgate University players). Many of the players were from or had connections to Utica, NY. The book can be signed or personalized by the author.
